Today is the Global Tiger Day!

Some endangered species have their special day to raise awareness on conservation efforts. Today is also known as the International Tiger Day to remind us that they are loosing their habitat and there are organizations trying to protect them.

The Animal of the Month- Giraffes

Giraffe images can be very special!

This animal is unique and when you go photographing it you should keep in mind its special features.

One important aspect is their looooooong neck. So you can take a vertical photo to emphasize that.  Giraffes are the tallest animals on earth. Males are from 16 to 18 feet tall, while females are from 14 to 16 feet tall.

Interesting fact: Their neck is actually too short for them to drink water. They have to awkwardly spread their front legs,  or kneel in order to reach the ground or drink water.

Another unique feature of giraffes is their coat pattern. You can emphasize it by photographing a giraffe next to another, like this:

Interesting fact: They are strong enough to kill a lion with their hooves.

Giraffes have a very sweet look with beautiful eyes and long eyelashes. They make great pictures because of their tenderness.

Tip: Always look for the youngsters, they usually have loving parents always looking after them.

Interesting fact: Did you know that there are 9 subspecies of giraffes? The Angolensis, Antiquorum, Camelopardalis, Giraffa (Cape Giraffe), Peralta, Reticulata, Maasai, Rothschildi, Thornicrofti and Tippelskirchi. They all have different coat patterns.

Zoo Animal Photos Tip #10: Zoo Etiquette for Photographers

Photography is welcome in most zoos, but you need to follow these guidelines:

1. Respect the animals at all times. Remember that this is THEIR space and you are the VISITOR, so do not disturb them.
2. Do not flash the animals. I’ll give you tips on how to compensate low light situations, but keep in mind not to use your camera’s flash.
3. Do not get in the way of other visitors. Sometimes photographers are literally focused on the animals and completely forget about the people around them. They want to see the animals too!
4. Stay behind any barriers and stay in the public areas at all times. If you really want to get closer, use a zoom lens.
5. Monopods vs Tripods- Check if the zoo allows the use of tripods at their premises. Some zoos just allow monopods (which I recommend).
6. Photos for personal use. You need your zoo’s permission for selling photographs taken there. Each zoo has their own policy about what they consider to be commercial use. Some are more flexible than others.

Some of these guidelines may seem common sense, but it is not always the case. Hope you found this helpful and let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Zoo Camps Time!

Wonder why there are so many kids at the zoo these days?

It is not only because they are on school break. They are at zoo camp!

Zoos plan activities for children all year-long. These camps usually start in June and end until August. It is a great experience for kids since they are divided into groups according their age, so they make new friends.

These camps are full of games, crafts and demonstrations. Children spend all day learning about animals, their habitats and how to take care of them.

The fact that there are zoo camps does not mean that kids are all over the place all day. Their activities are well planned, so they do take tours, but they also usually have specific areas where they spend some time for educational lessons that are meant to inspire caring for animals, conservation, and the natural world.

If you are interested, you need to contact your local zoo for more information about zoo camp registration, fees and activities. Some groups might have a waiting list if they are full.
